The Fair: Part 2

When we got there, David slapped down a five dollar bill on the counter. The man behind the booth handed him three darts. David looked over at me, and gave a little half smile. He got ready to throw the first dart. Pop. Pop. He popped two balloons.
“What did I just get myself into”, I thought to myself. Pop. Pop. He did it again. This time I actually said it out loud, and he just laughed. He got ready to throw his last dart. Pop. This time he only popped one.
Now it’s my turn. I went to give the man running the booth five dollars, but David beat me to it. I just looked at him.
“This bet was my idea. It’s only fair that I pay for both rounds”, He said. I nodded my head in agreement, and then got ready to throw my first dart. The metal was cold on my fingers. I released the dart. Pop. I had only popped one balloon. David chuckled a little. I just stared at the dart trying to remember what it felt like to throw that dart, and tried to calculate what I could do to make my next throw better. The second dart was in my hand. I adjusted my aim a little, but just before I went to throw the dart, I heard David’s voice.
“Gather round ladies and gents. Piper is about to make her next attempt at balloon darts.” He sounded like a baseball announcer. “She has popped one already. Can she do it again?” When I looked at him, he just laughed a little. I rolled my eyes, and got ready to throw my next dart. I released. Pop. Pop. Two popped.
“Well look at that folks. Piper has popped two. Will she be able to beat David? She needs to pop at least three balloons on this next throw. Can Piper do the impossible?” David was being such a dork. The last dart was in my hands. I could feel my anticipation weighing down my shoulders. A shiver went down my back. I took in a deep breath as I aimed to the far side of the booth. I released for the last time. Pop. Pop. Pop. I looked over at David his jaw was on the ground.
“Look at that ladies and gents. She can do the impossible. Piper has just popped not one, not two, but three balloons”, I said acting like I had a microphone in my hand. Then I giggled. “So David.” He looked away from the dart and to me. “Where are we going for ice cream?”

The Fair: Part 1

“Hey, watch where you’re going!” That’s how my day at the fair started. I turned around to see what was happening. A couple of girls had bumped into each other. One had a blue sweater, and the other had a gold jacket.

“That was your fault sweetheart”, said blue sweater girl. The one in the gold jacket just narrowed her eyes and said, “Don’t call me sweetheart”. She pushed blue sweater girl’s shoulder. Blue sweater girl pushed her back, but harder. Before I knew it, they were in a full out fight. A crowd started to gather. I wanted to leave, but the crowd was too thick. I couldn’t get out. Eventually some officials came to break up the fight, and everyone scattered. I was pushed this way and that in the chaos. My feet stumbled over themselves, and I ended up falling over. I expected to hit the ground, but something broke my fall. It took me a second to register what I had fallen on. It was a person, and not just any person, it was a boy. I got up as fast as possible, and then helped him up.

“I am so sorry”, I said.

“It’s okay. It wasn’t your fault. Those people are crazy.” He had dark curly hair, and sparkling green eyes. He had a bright smile, too. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was what lit up the world in the day, not the sun.

“Are you okay”, he asked. I had no idea how long I had been silently standing there.

“Oh, um, yeah I’m fine”, I replied. “What about you? You’re the one who made contact with the ground.” He laughed, and said, “Yeah I’m good.”

“Well that’s good.” I smiled back at him. “So, um I guess I’ll be going now.”

“Hey wait, what’s your name”, he asked just as I went to turn and leave.

“I’m Piper”, I answered.

“Well Piper, My name is David.” He stuck out his hand, and I shook it. I didn’t want to leave, but it was going to get awkward soon. So, I had to make up something fast.

“I got to go. I’m on my way to balloon darts, and I don’t want the line to get to long before I get there.”

“Oh I’m great at balloon darts. I bet you can’t pop more than me in just one round.” This was perfect. I could still talk to him, and it wouldn’t be awkward.

“I’ll take you up on that bet.”

“Okay, if you win I’ll buy you ice cream”, he offered.

“And if you win?”

“If I win you have to go on a real date with me.”

“Deal”, I said as I put out my hand for him to shake. Once he did, we ran off to the balloon dart booth to see who would win the bet.
