The Smallest Glow

There once was a kingdom of wonderful people. Every minute of every day was immensely wondrous. You could tell because all the people had smiles on their faces. Good days on their tongues. But the most obvious is how bright their crowns glows. You see a very famous inventor lived in this kingdom. His name was Hewitt van Lentue. He invented these crowns that glowed depending on your mood. The happier you are the brighter it grew. The sadder/less confident you are the less it glowed. Lentue’s invention was so great literally everyone had one.
A little boy named Egan wasn’t so happy about his crown though. Egan was a small fellow. He wasn’t the strongest, smartest, or fastest. He wasn’t really the best at anything. The poor boy was always picked last in gym, and was teased for being dyslexic. Egan’s crown was especially dim most of the time.
The only time it brightened a little was when his mother sent him his monthly letter. She had been traveling the world and could only send him a letter per month.
Well, one day Egan was on his way home when he saw a flier that said there would be a contest to see who could entertain the king the most. Whoever won would live in the palace and entertain the king whenever he needed cheering up. There was a separate sheet for people who wanted to sign up. Only one spot was still open. Going to wright his name, some one pushed him and wrote their name. Egan frowned. He wanted to cry but didn’t want to look like a baby. The person, who wrote their name, wrote it in cursive. Which made it hard for Egan to read do to his dyslexia. The poor boy got frustrated and started to cry, and went home.
When Egan got home he made a fire to stay warm. His home wasn’t even fit for a homeless family. All he had was a small hole in the side of a building. It was just big enough to hold him and a fire, without getting wet from rain or snow.
Before he fell asleep he checked the buildings mailbox. That was the mailbox his mother sent her letters to. Yet her letter for this month was not there yet. Egan went back to his little hole and fire. The fire went out and he fell asleep with his tiny blanket. The little boy had a wonderful dream that night. He dreamed his mother was home. They lived in a small log house. He was sitting on her lap listening to her sing his favorite song. “I went to the animal fair. The birds and the beasts were there. The big baboon by the light of the moon, was combing his auburn hair,” She sang so sweetly, Dream Egan started falling asleep. The dream faded as real Egan fell deeper into sleep.
Morning came, and Egan emerged from his den. The streets were flooded. Everyone was going to the palace. Egan didn’t know the contest was that day. He quickly got to the palace. Poor Egan got there just after they closed the gates. He sat on the steps and began to cry. Now his crown was completely dark. His face was soaked when he looked up. The tears had stopped because he had remembered what his mother had once said. “No matter how bad things may seem. They happen for a reason”. That saying went through his head over and over. Words started coming from his mouth in a melody. He was singing his favorite song. Egan didn’t notice the two guards were listening to him. One of them ran inside. When he came out Egan was still singing. When he finally finished, he was startled at the sound of three peoples applause. He turned to find the guards and the king listening to him sing. The king had a tear on his cheek. For, when he was young his mother had also sung that very song to him. He said to Egan “my dear boy, what a wonderful song you sing. Also I have observed the site of your crown. You are unhappy, no?” Egan nodded at the king.
“I have been living on my own while my mother travels. She needs to, to make sure that I have enough money back here to eat”, Egan told him. He wasn’t trying to guilt trip the king. He just needed to say those words. They had been hiding on the back of his tongue for a while now.
“You have no need for worry anymore. You will live with me”, said the king. He turned to his guard and told him to send everyone home. By this time Egan’s crown was so bright, he had to close his eyes. Just then he asked the king if he could find his mother. The happy king was glad to help. Especially when Egan told him she hasn’t wrote him in two months.
A year later, Egan found someone in the entryway of the palace. She had one bag of clothes and tears in her eyes. Egan ran to her and gave her the biggest hug. His mother kissed him. Then started singing his favorite song.
