Vixie

Have you ever wondered what really is out in the world? I certainly have, but you would think I haven’t even wondered that. Mainly because, well, I’m a spy in training… kind of. I’ll never forget the story about how I came to know my parents true job, the story that started it all. Perhaps you want to hear the story? Of course you do.
Well, it all started with a simple “Good night, Vixie” that my mom told me when I went to bed. I slumped down the hallway to my room, to give the impression that I really was tired, and going to bed. I was pretty confident that they believed me.
Once I was in my room, I slipped into some pajama pants and a tang top. I got into bed and listened for the TV channel to change to the local news.
After the weatherman came on, I counted to 30 and quietly slipped out from under my warm covers. My body told my mind that it wanted the warm comforter back, but I resisted.
I knew my parents would be sitting on the couch watching for any breaking news. I also knew that there was a floorboard in the hallway that creaked every time you stepped on it.  I knew the exact location of it, but it was hard to get around it without being seen or heard. Only one side of the hallway was completely dark with shadows. Usually I just stayed in the shadows just before the squeaky floorboard, but tonight was different, my parents were talking about… me.
“Mason, I don’t think she is ready yet. We can’t tell her.” I don’t know about most girls, but at that moment I needed to get closer.
“We might never have a chance like this again. Rachel she has to know.”
I stood up knowing full well that they still wouldn’t be able to see me. The shadows are really thick in the hallway. I crept closer. An eerie creek filled the house. I looked down. How could I have been so sloppy? I had just stepped on the bad floorboard. I looked back up. My parents were looking in my direction.
“Go to bed Vixie.”

Find out what happens to Vixie next week. Until next time, keep your mind wide open!
