tick tick boom

My alarm clock rings. I get up as fast as I can, thinking to myself “today’s the day” over and over. Get dressed, brush my teeth, take a shower, and put on coat, shoes, and watch. Out the door I go. I hop on my bike and ride to school, a mile away. Geez it’s tough in the morning for a middle school spy. Ha, ha I forgot to tell you. My name is Whitney, and I attend Bad Gadget Middle School (aka B.G.M school). It’s hidden under a strip mall in New Jersey. My great-great grandfather founded this school after meeting my great-great grandmother. Anyways back to why today is so important. Now, only about half the 8th grade usually passes the final simulation exam. But lately rumors have been going around that the team with the best score will get an extra prize for graduating top of the class. On my team- Chloe: bomb defuse expert, Jake: navigation wiz, John: computer geek, Whitney: kick-butt pro. The simulation exam is a test that takes place in a white simulation room, every team has a different mission, and if they fail their assignment then they don’t graduate and get held back in a special class called 8th ½ grade. And let me tell you, if you get into that class, good luck graduating B.G.H School (high school).  I meet up with my team. “What’s up girlfriend” yelled out Chloe. We always make fun of the girls we see on TV. Jake and John did their cool handshake. Jake gave me a high five and laughed. John half smiled. Chloe just winked at me. I was so confused, why is everyone being weird. Well that can wait. The assistant principle came on the speaker. “Team W.J.C.J to the simulator please, your exam is ready”. We all were more nervous than we ever have been before. The room we were in suddenly filled with a green grid and everything turned to the h.q. of the most wanted mastermind of the country. Jake and Chloe went to the vents and worked on getting in. in no time the front gate whooshed open without a sound. We all started to run down the corridors. We all stopped to check our map, when suddenly a hand reached out for me. I grabbed it, shifted my weight, threw him over my shoulder, twisted his arm, and landed my knee on his back. Jack quickly retrieved the guards’ weapon. When we looked up guards had their hands out reached. Next thing I knew we were in the control room. Which is also where we needed to be. Guards surrounded us. I winked at Jake. We went back-to-back locked arms. He lifted me and started spinning. I started kicking and all the guards took a kick to the head, knocking them out. Suddenly the computers started beeping. Bombs were about to go off, in every huge city of the world. John worked his magic. The computer shouted, “10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2 bombs deactivated” we all started cheering. A huge object came up from the ground. It was the last and final bomb we didn’t know about. Chloe went strait to it and opened it up. Wires everywhere, but this was a simple red or blue wire cut. Problem was Chloe forgot which to cut. “Red, no blue, no red” she kept saying. She wasn’t sure but she guested blue. It stopped counting down. The room turned back to a green grid. The principle came on the speaker “congratulations! You have passed with flying colors”. We rejoiced. Chloe gave everyone a hug. John got a little longer hug. I noticed Jake was looking at me. He got a really cute twinkle in his eye. Chloe giggled. John chuckled. Jake hit him on the shoulder. John and Chloe left the room talking about strategy. Jake and I talked about the mission. I started to get this really weird feeling in the pit of my stomach. It was like my insides were turning to smoothies then fluttering away. Jake started stuttering. The green grid appeared again. For some reason, I could tell it was Chloe and John in the control room. It went from a green grid to a beautiful sunset scene. I could see it in Jakes eyes that he wanted to punch John in the nose, but at the same time he wanted to thank him. Jake started running his mouth about the last two years. He took in a big sigh and leaned in and whispered in my ear “I love you!” Finally we locked eyes. Not just to have good manners or because we were friends. No, it was a much deeper. Like we were supposed to do something. Something we both wanted to do for a long time. We leaned together. My lips touched his. Both our eyes closed. I guess Chloe and John planned the whole thing, because without our attention the scene turned back to a room. She came on the intercom saying “about time. We were starting to think you two would just hug and leave.” Laughing came from the speaker. Jakes face turned cherry red and mine felt lava hot. We smiled. I put my hand in his. He gave an extra large grin. We walked out of the simulation room. My mom was waiting for us out side the door. Her arms were crossed and her face was angry. It stinks sometimes when your mom is the head principal. “Jake M, Kingslie. I am so disappointed…” her anger turned to a grin “that you kissed her without a date”. Jake let out a sigh of relief. I giggled. He looked at me again, then at my mom. She looked at him, sending a silent message, she left. He quick kissed me on the cheek. “I saw that” my mom exclaimed. “I swear she has eyes in the back of her head” I said giggling. Jake walked me to my dorm room so I could start packing for summer vacation. Fortunately, we live near Jake. I took one last look at my new, and first boyfriend. Soaking in every detail of his face, I noticed a new twinkle to his eye. I walked into my room. Put my back to the door. Bad Gadget High, look out.
